Cherohala
Skyway
The Cherohala Skyway, a ridge crest route between Tennessee and North Carolina,
opened in Oct. 12, 1996, and was immediately acclaimed as one of the most
scenic routes in the United States, especially when fall colors are in
full view. Veteran travelers say it is more beautiful than Vermont in
the fall. In April 1997, it was declared a Scenic Byway.
The U.S. Forest Service has made an effort to keep things as natural
as possible along the scenic roadway. Guard rails are a natural, rusted
brown to blend in with the earth and trees. Scenic overlooks are off the
road and enhance the solitude you can experience in this pristine area.

There are several
large scenic overlooks with plenty of parking space, picnic tables and
bathrooms along the Skyway.

Each year local
residents from Tennessee and North Carolina celebrate the heritage of the
Skyway with a "Wagon Train." These festive events are fun-filled
with camping, horse back riding and a little taste of "yesteryear."
Contact our office or the "Tellico Plains Chamber of Commerce"
for more information about the wagon-train.
